A self-dehiscent artificial seed characterized in that a plant propagation material which grows into a plant body is enclosed therein, that the tunic mainly comprises an alginic acid gel wherein part of complexing cations are replaced by non-complexing cations, that the surface of the tunic is hardened, and optionally that the tunic and/or the periphery thereof contain(s) an ion exchanger.
