To effect the dia. profile of the end zones of heated rollers such as in paper polishing and super calender assemblies, the heat loss at the end zone of the roller is blocked by external insulation. This increases the mean temp. of the roller and enlarges the dia. of the end zone of the roller and at the edges of the paper web. Pref. at least one thermal insulation body is round the ends of the roller mantle, as a thermal insulating varnish or a ring which slides axially over the end of the roller mantle. The ring can be fixed in place, and can be insulating tape wound round the end of the mantle. The ring can also be screwed into place, or it can be a U-shaped profile, open to the roller mantle. The ring can be held in place by mountings, with connections for the feed and exhaust of a heated or cooled medium. ADVANTAGE - The assembly gives a simple setting for the roller dia. and its temp. to avoid over pressing of the paper material without separate systems for the body of the roller and its end zones
