The leather-based composite material (1) comprises a core (2) consisting of an elastic sheet capable of being reversibly extended under the effect of traction (F) in at least one direction of elasticity, and on at least one of the core's faces and firmly adhering to the latter at all its surface points there is a leather sheet (3) which has been glued onto the elastic sheet (2) whilst the latter was drawn and extended under the effect of a predefined traction (F) below its elastic limit, said traction being suppressed once the glue has set. Each leather sheet (3) is between about 0.2 and 0.6 mm thick. The material can be used to replace leather in the manufacture of such articles as shoes and household furniture. |
