Rubbish (12) is lifted from the carriageway (10) through an aspiration port (16) into a hose (14) in which a vol. flowmeter (34) measures the strength (V dot) of suction into the collector. Leading and trailing edges (36,38) of the port (16) are adjusted (26,28) by a computer which works out the optimal air speed in the suction gap (30). The clearances (h1,h2) are related to the depth of rubbish (12) and its density by calculation based on prior empirical determn. of the relationships among them. ADVANTAGE - Reliable and efficient cleaning with min. suction power ensured without risk of blockage of inlet.
