A novel process for the preparation of disodium 2-(methylthio)barbiturate is described, in which thiourea, dimethyl malonate and sodium methoxide are reacted to give disodium thiobarbiturate. This disodium thiobarbiturate is then reacted with methyl bromide to give the final product, if appropriate in the presence of a base. |
