The system comprises two optical sensors (3) in the rear lights of the vehicle. They are operated on a pulsed basis, and incorporate a radiation transmitter and a receiver. The sensors are positioned at an angle to the vertical which prevents any effect of unwanted light on the receiver. The transmitter and receiver are directed in parallel, and are optically insulated from one another. The transmitter is set in operation by an impulse generator (2) which is started by a switch (1), e.g vehicle reversing lights. If an object is present in the radiation lobe, the reflected radiation from it reaches the receiver and is passed to a signal prepn. unit (4). This unit only amplifies high frequency signal components emitted by the transmitter, and passes them to a signal evaluator (5). Thus, if a min. distance between the rear of the object is not maintained, a warning signal light illuminates within view of the driver. USE/ADVANTAGE - To assist in safe parking of vehicles.
