The load busbars of an uninterruptable island power supply (UPS) are fed in parallel with photovoltaic panels connected to the load busbars through inverters, wind generating plant connected to the busbars through transformers, a storage battery with self-commutating inverters through a transformer, and a diesel-powered emergency generator. The photovoltaic panels and wind generators supply the load and the battery charging, and if there is insufficient solar or wind energy, the battery then provides a boost to the busbars. In extreme circumstances, the emergency generator will come on line to supply power, at the same time, charging the battery through line-commutating rectifiers. ADVANTAGE - Good power and reactive power control without need of continuously-running synchronous generator, using commercially-available equipment.
