The apparatus of the invention comprises a sample suction tube (14), a light emitting element (10), a driving circuit (16) for driving the light emitting element (10), a photosensor (12) for receiving light from the light emitting element (10) via the sample suction tube (14), a judging circuit (20) for judging that a sample is in the sample suction tube (14) on the basis of an output (Vp) from the photosensor (12), and a controller (22) for automatically regulating the driving of the light emitting element (10), before sample suction, so that the output (Vp) of the photosensor (12) is substantially the same as a reference value (Vr), and for holding the driving of the light emitting element (10) during sample suction.
