To provide lift for the approximately spherical body (13) of a light aircraft, an annular rotor is fitted about half way up. The rotor consists of two annular membranes (2,3) around the periphery, rotating in opposite directions and supported at their outer edges by sets of rollers (7,8,17,18) inside a housing ring (6). The rotor is driven at its inner edge by a toothed ring for each membrane, meshing with a driven pinion (9,10) between them. Each membrane consists of a ring of tilting blades providing lift in the manner of helicopter blades.
