An inorganic oxide carrier is contacted with a magnesium dialkoxide, a solvent for magnesium dialkoxide, which involves a chlorinated alcohol as main constituent, and a titanium alkoxide. The carrier is chlorinated with a chlorinated medium and the chlorinated product is recovered to provide the catalyst precursor. - As solvent for magnesium dialkoxide is used an additive to at most 2 mol/mol of magnesium dialkoxide of a chlorinated alcohol with the formula R''OH in which R'' is a chlorinated 2-10C alkyl group, whereby the chlorinated alcohol is pref. 2,2,2-trichlorethanol. The magnesium dialkoxide used has the formula Mg(OR')2 in which R' is the same or two different 2-8C alkyl groups. The titanium alkoxide used has the formula Ti(OR''')4 in which R''' is the same or different 2-3C alkyl groups and the used titanium alkoxide is pref. titanium tetrabutoxide. |
