PURPOSE:To hold light sources more stably with simpler structure by embedding the light sources nearby an end part of a flat photoconductive plate made of a transparent material. CONSTITUTION:The surface light source device is equipped with the flat photoconductive plate 1 made of the transparent material, a couple of fluorescent lamps 2 and 2 as the light sources embedded in the both-end part substrate of this photoconductive plate 1, and many light scattering bodies 3 and 3 which are scattered on the surface of the photoconductive plate 1. Reflecting films 4 and 4 are provided on the external surfaces of both the end parts of the photoconductive plate 1 where the fluorescent lamps 2 and 2 are embedded while surrounding the fluorescent lamps 2 and 2, respectively. In this case, the light sources are integrated by the photoconductive plate 1 itself. Then the light emitted by the light sources is reflected by the reflecting plate 4 provided on the external surface nearby the end part of the photoconductive plate 1 and converged toward the center of the photoconductive plate 1.
