Multicylinder IC engine with catalytic converter - arrangement of one exhaust pipe inside another upstream of converter to conserve heat

The multicylinder IC engine (1) has a catalytic exhaust gas cleaning system (7). Upstream of this are two individual cylinders or groups of cylinders (2a, 2d and 2b, 2c). They are joined via manifolds (3a, 3d and 3b, 3c) to two exhaust gas pipes (4, 5). One of the exhaust gas pipes (4) runs for a considerable distance inside the other exhaust gas pipe (5). USE/ADVANTAGE - The arrangement minimises the heat losses from the exhaust gas pipes of an IC engine and so improves the start-up behaviour of the catalyst for cleaning the exhaust gases.
