The invention relates to a circuit for adapting coefficients in the equaliser of a modem, comprising a cell (13) for storing a coefficient, an adapter (16) receiving the output from the cell (13) and delivering a first signal (C%i(t+1)) endowed with a first correction, and an adder (38) receiving the first signal and delivering a second signal (Ci(t+1)) to the cell. The adder receives, in addition to the first signal, a value k much less than 1 endowed with the sign delivered by a comparator (34) between an initial value (Ci(0)) of the relevant coefficient and its present value. <IMAGE>
