A burner unit for heating a gaseous medium comprising: a heat exchanger (6) provided with tubes (7), wherein the space between the tubes on the upstream located side is connected to a feed duct (20) for the gaseous medium for heating; a combustion chamber (11) arranged connecting onto the heat exchanger (6) and connected to the downstream located side of the space between the tubes in the combustion chamber; a burner (10) placed in the combustion chamber (11); a fuel supply duct (15) connected to the burner (10); a connecting duct (12,13) which is received in the combustion chamber (11) and which connects the side of the combustion chamber remote from the heat exchanger (6) to a side of the tubes (6) forming part of the heat exchanger (6); and a flue gas outlet duct (17) connected to the other side of the tubes forming part of the heat exchanger, wherein the connecting duct is formed by tube parts (12,13) forming an elongation of the tube parts (7) forming part of the heat exchanger (6), so that the need to employ a tube plate becomes superfluous and damage resulting from increased thermal stresses is thereby prevented. <IMAGE>
