A vehicle (10) is washed in a cleaning bay (11) by directing a mixture of liquid and detergent towards the vehicle from washing trolleys (14, 22). Soiling dislodged from the vehicle travels in the liquid to a collection pit (18) in the form of particles of solids. A pump (30) in the pit pumps the mixture to a first collection vessel (32) which includes baffles (37, 43, 44) and in which the solids settle as a sludge (40). When the sludge (40) reaches a particular level, liquid is removed from the vessel to leave wet sludge in the vessel. A second collection vessel (65) is then used to receive mixture from the pump (30) while the sludge (40) in the first collection vessel (32) is allowed to dry for subsequent disposal as dry solids. |
