In a fiber type wavelength conversion element, which has a fiber core made of non-linear optical crystal and in which a wavelength of incident ight is converted by non-linear optical effects of the second order on the core, a clad material is used, which has a refractive index to satisfy a condition of: 0.95<n clad2 omega /n core omega <1.005 where the refractive index of the core to incident light is ncore omega , and the refractive index of the clad to secondary higher harmonic light as nclad2 omega .
