PURPOSE:To obtain a low-cost material for retaining water in soil, excellent in fertilizing effect, water retentivity, handleability, etc., by using coffee grounds and a water-insoluble, highly water-absorbing resin as the essential constituents and forming pellets or granules from the material. CONSTITUTION:Ground coffee beans after brewing are mixed with a water- insoluble, highly water-absorbing resin (e.g. the hydrolyzate of a starch/ acrylonitrile graft polymer). An aqueous solution of a binder (e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose) is incorporated into the mixture, from which pellets or granules are formed and dried to produce a material for retaining water in soil. The suitable amount of the coffee grounds is about 70-95 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. total of the coffee grounds and the highly water-absorbing resin. Since the obtained material has a fertilizing effect, it is not necessary to separately fertilize when growing a plant. |
