摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain the subject new compound useful as an optically active lactone derivative, etc., for ferroelectric liquid crystal material having quick response, etc., by reacting an acetonitrile derivative with an optically active epichlorohydrin in the presence of a strong base. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II [C* is asymmetric carbon atom having (R) or (S) configulation] [e.g. (4R)-4,5-epoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl) pentanitrile] is produced by reacting a derivative of formula I (R<1> is alkyl; (n) is 1 or 2) with an optically active epichlorohydrin in the presence of a strong base such as NaH and potassium t-butoxide. An optically active lactone derivative can be produced by reacting the compound of formula I with an organometallic compound of formula R-M [R is 1-10C alkyl which may be substituted with 1-10C alkoxy; M is MgX (X is Cl, Br, etc.) or Li] in the presence of cuprous iodide catalyst, hydrolyzing the obtained optically active compound of formula III and subjecting the product to lactonization, etc.
