Process for staining a nucleic acid sequence attached onto a solid support, in which an enzymatic system capable of binding onto this sequence is used to detect it by a non-radioactive-type labelling and this enzymatic system is reacted with a chromogenic substrate so as to form a coloured product. A revealing solution is used comprising a sulphur-containing organic compound forming the substrate, capable of being hydrolysed by the enzyme to form an organic compound containing a thiol functional group, as well as a compound of a metal, other than gold, soluble and stable in aqueous solution, capable of reacting with the organic compound containing a thiol functional group so as to form a metal-organic compound complex having a colour specific for the complex, which precipitates in situ.
