The method is used for video and audio recording executed in the forward and reverse directions, and is based upon a microcomputer (1) that has a coupled display unit (2), a mechanism controller (3), end of tape sensor (4), power supply unit (5), remote control signal receiver (6) and a key board (7). The search method comprises the steps of detecting an inputting of an auto random search key; converting the present mode into an auto random search mode; when detecting the inputting of the auto random search key; executing a reproduction operation in a predetermined time to execute a high speed searching operation; and executing the reproduction operation.
