The invention relates to a tool for punching characters on plates, in particular on registration plates for motor vehicles. This tool is characterised in that the respective supports (11, 5) of the punch (9) and of the die (7) are moulded from a composite plastic material, one of the supports including, in symmetry with respect to a median plane, a pivot head (13) fitted with lateral axial studs (19) and the other support comprising two lateral wings (15) which receive the said pivot head (13) between them and each of which has a vertical oblong axial hole (21) into which the said stud fits, the axial studs (19) engaging in the corresponding axial holes (21) in the said wings by snap-fastening means. <IMAGE>
