摘要 <p>An improved leak detection float system for use in underground storage tank (10) containing fuel (20) wherein the float system utilizes an elongated hollow test probe (30) extending downwardly into an underground storage tank (10) and into the fuel (20) stored therein. A microprocessor (70) is contained in an upper compartment (46) of the test probe (30) along with control electronics (80). A rod (40) is centrally affixed in the lower portion (42) of the test probe (30) and a float (100) is disposed around the rod (40), but within the test probe (30) so as to float on the surface (22) of the fuel (20). The float (100) uses tapered edges to minimize offset error due to surface tension. An excitation transducer (50) is placed above the float (100) on the rod (40) which produces vibrational waves (55) down the rod (40) having a predetermined frequency, power, and duration. The vibrational wave breaks the surface tension existing between the float (100) and the fuel (20) so that the float (100) can obtain a position within the fluid (20) based upon the buoyancy of the float (100) in the fluid (20).</p>
