In order to improved the wear resistance of tools with diamond cutting edges, it is proposed that the diamond body be coated with a 0.5 to 6 mu m thick layer of at least one oxide of the metals zirconium and/or yttrium and/or magnesium and/or titanium and/or aluminium, preferably aluminium oxide. The coating is deposited from the gas phase at gas-phase temperatures of up to 800 DEG C. Pulse-plasma chemical vapour deposition (CVD) techniques are preferably used for the coating process. Diamond tools coated in this way are particularly suitable for use in cutting work on carbon-affine materials, such as iron-containing materials or steel.______
