A bolted rail fastening system comprising a rail (10) mounted in a recessed area (16) of a tie plate (18) being secured to a cross-tie (36) by coach screws (42, 44) extending downwardly therethrough. The rail (10) is maintained in the recessed area (16) by a pair of clips (56) positioned at each side of the rail which will remain in position even if the nuts associated therewith become loose.
