<p>The present invention provides a package (82) for and a method of hydrating and calibrating a hydratable sensor component (32) of a fiber-optic catheter which is useful for measuring an analyte other than chloride in a physiological milieu. The package (82) includes a manifold connected to the sensor component (32) by plumbing (92). The medical device is sealed between an inner wrap (16) and an outer wrap (18) which provide gas permeable surfaces. The package (82) includes calibration reservoirs (84a and 84b), each containing a separate calibration solution, and a reservoir (108) containing a hydration solution. Each reservoir includes a rupture plate (86) and an envelope (90). The plumbing (92) includes calibration tubes (98a and 98b) and sterilization tubes (100a and 100b). The package (82) also includes a deposit reservoir (109) sized so as to receive all of the hydration and calibration solutions to be used in the device. The medical device is hydratable by directing the hydration solution to the sensor component (32) by means of the plumbing (92). By connecting the calibration reservoirs (84a and 84b) to the plumbing (92), the calibration solution is directed to the sensor component (32) without removing the medical device from a sterile environment. The present invention further discloses a solution for preparing the medical device for use.</p> |
