Electrical cable winding method - controlling impulse rotation of drum and with measured feed of cable onto drum

The method involves holding a cable drum (6) in a pendant mounting between two pivot supports (5). The drum is driven by a servo motor (8) from one side. The mounting is in a portal frame (1) which moves on rails (2) parallel to the drum axis, to lay the windings accorately onto the drum. The feed rate of the cable onto the drum is measured and a servo drive (17,18) moves the portal frame laterally on the rails to space the windings. A processor control regulates the lateral movement of the frame to prevent the cable windings from pushing against each other. The lateral drive is via a rack and pinion support (13). The winder is programmed w.r.t. the cable diameter and the drum size. ADVANTAGE - Accurate winding control, eg. for freshly extruded cable covering.
