The object (5) laid on a reference plane (4) is illuminated by reflector lamps, one (1) above and the other (2) below it. A diffusor (14) is arranged on a slope under the plane (4), and the background is darkened (15) under the lower lamp (2). The contours of the object (5) appear as areas of different brightness to a CCD video camera (3) placed vertically above it. The horizontal and vertical distances (X,Y) of the lamps (1,2) from the camera (3) are optimised.
