<p>An apparatus and method for removing a modular ball head (28) from a prosthesis stem (30) by heat expanding the modular ball head (28) and subjecting it to an impact force in a direction such that it is removed from the prosthesis stem (30). A housing (12) receives the modular ball head (28) therein while the prosthesis stem (30) is still within a patient's femur. A heater (16) within the housing heats the modular ball head (28). An impact hammer (18) comprised of a mass (36) slideably mounted on a rod (118) is attached to the housing and has an anvil (38) stop at one end. The housing is thermally insulated to retain heat while protecting an operator and the patient from burns. The heat generated is controlled as to amount and duration.</p> |
