The bottle return appts. has an insertion chamber (20) which is loaded with empty bottles through a closable opening (24) in the appts. housing. A bottle receiving chamber (12) accepts bottles transported individually from the insertion chamber via a motor-driven conveyor (58). At least two contact arms (42) are arranged at different heights in the insertion chamber for providing a bottle position signal, which is used to control the conveyor. In order to detect bottles of several different sizes and surface contour, the contact arms are formed as levers which move obliquely in the insertion chamber and cooperate with a bottle positioning stop (36). ADVANTAGE - Can be programmed to accept different types of returnable bottles.
