The tape splicing mechanism has a device (28,29) for drawing a standard length of splicing tape (44) from a source of supply and a device for severing (34) a portion of the splicing tape from the leading end of this standing length. The severed end portion is then displaced in a direction generally parallel to the standing length from the cut off portion to an application position where it is to be applied to a tape to be spliced. The displacement devices are provided with stroke setters (34,35, 36,37,38) by which the length of the stroke in carrying the severed end portion from the cut-off position to the application position can be set whereby selectively to determine at least two different lengths of stroke of the displacement devices (21,22).
