The cam allows variation of valve lift. It has a rigid component (20) which is free to move radially along parallel guides (21,22) in the camshaft (3). Movement of the component (20) takes place between a retracted position, in which a peripheral area of the component (20) lies radially within the periphery of a second, non-variable, cam (5) representing minimum stroke, and an extended position in which the component surface lies radially outside the periphery of the second cam (5). Interacting stops (29,30) on the camshaft (3) and component (20) limit the extent of radial movement. USE/ADVANTAGE - A robust and flexible valve operating system for an IC engine which allows optimum performance.
