The device, which can be fitted on-board a road vehicle, makes it possible to monitor the position of the vehicle with respect to the road markings. It comprises a camera (10) supplying an image of the road in front of the vehicle; a programmed computer (24-28) having image-processing means making it possible to reconstruct the image in three-dimensions, taking account of perspective and, by applying probability criteria, making it possible to identify the road markings; and display or alarm means in the case of an abnormal position of the vehicle with respect to the road markings. <IMAGE>
