In a drum washing machine 4 having a washing drum, which is driven more slowly during a wetting phase than during a washing phase, scoop devices 11, 12, 20, 27, 31 are arranged on the drum circumference and constructed in such a way that they pick up the scooped water during the wetting phase in a position below the axis 15 of rotation of the drum and discharge it into the interior of the drum in a position above the axis of rotation of the drum. During this process the laundry is sprayed during the wetting phase.
