IN-LINE SOLENOID TRANSMISSION INTERLOCK DEVICE

A transmission shift interlock device (12) which prevents a motor vehicle operator from shifting the automatic transmission shift lever (16) out of the park or neutral position unless some action such as the brake pedal being depressed is taken. The device (12) provides interlock capability by locking the transmission shift cable (22). An in-line solenoid (12) is provided within the shifter cable (22) having a movable armature (54) which, when energized, forces locking balls (86) or other engagement features into interlocking engagement with the cable core (29) or rod member (28) attached thereto. An alternate embodiment provides an automatic adjusting means for accommodating vehicle tolerance variations and further provides means for having interlock capabilities at more than one shifter position.
