An optical switch comprises a dual-core optical fibre coupler having waveguides (4 and 6) which are erbium doped, silica-based fibre amplifiers. The waveguides (4 and 6) are pumped by pump lasers (18 and 20) which are used to control the mean differential gain of the waveguides to be zero or a first value at which two values the linear coupler is a crosscoupler or a through-coupler at an operating wavelength ( lambda 1). |
