Pyrimidinyl-substd. (thio)salicylaldehyde and (thio)salicylic acid derivs. (I) and their salts are new. In (I), R1 = H; succinylimidooxy; 5-membered heteroaryl contg. 1-3 N atoms and opt. 1-4 halo and/or 1-2 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C haloalkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C haloalkoxy and/or 1-4C alkylthio substits.; OR5; -N=CR6R7; -(O)mNR14R15, -(CH2)l-CO-NR16NR17, -(CH2)l-S(O)kR18; -O-(CH2)l-P(O)(OR18)2 or -NHSO2R19, R2 = 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C haloalkoxy or halogen; R3 = H; and R4 = H; halogen; 1-4C alkoxy; 1-4C haloalkoxy; aryloxy; 1-4C haloalkyl; formyl; 1-8C alkoxycarbonyl; R3+R4 = -Z=CH-CH=CH- where Z = CH or N; R5 = H; alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or organic ammonium cation; 3-12C cycloalkyl opt. contg. 1-3 1-4C alkyl substits; 1-10C alkyl opt. contg. 1-5 halo and/or 1 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkylthio, cyano, 1-8C alkylcarbonyl, 1-8C alkoxycarbonyl, 3-12C cycloalkyl or phenyl, phenoxy or phenylcarbonyl substits.
