A device has a guiding cylinder (8) for receiving a cup (5) and having in its envelope a window (11), as well as a reflected light barrier (12) arranged outside the guiding cylinder (8), close to the window (11), whose detection range extends through the window (11) into the inner space (13) of the guiding cylinder (8). The reflected light barrier (12) senses and evaluates an identification mark (4) inscribed on the cup (5) in cooperation with a signal processing circuit connected downstream thereof. A catching member (17) and a positioning member (20) are both arranged in the direction of the axis (16) of the guiding cylinder (8), below the window (11), diametrally opposed in relation to the window (11) in the axial projection, whereas the positioning member (20) is located between the window (11) and the catching member (17). The catching member (17) and the positioning member (20) can be moved in and/or out of the inner space (13) of the guiding cylinder (8) each by its own controllable driving member (18, 21).
