Decontamination of soil contaminated with volatile compound - by first heating soil and removing gasified compound by suction

Material, esp. soil, which has been contaminated with a volatile organic compound is decontaminated by first homogenising and heating it and then placing it in a sealed container. The container is then connected to a vacuum pump which removes the organic compound which has been gasified by heating. The gas thus removed is then separated into its constituents. Air may be removed from the container together with the volatile compound. The pressure in the container is reduced to between 5 and 100 hPa, preferably 10 hPa below the pressure of the atmosphere. USE/ADVANTAGE - Decontamination of soil. Volatile organic compounds are removed by an inexpensive method.
