Anisotropic cpds. of formula R'-Y-Z-Y'-(Z'-Y'')n-R (I) are new. In (I), R' is halogen-substd. 2-7C alkyl; Y, Y' and Y'' are each a cyclohexane or 1,4-ethylenecyclohexane ring linked at positions 1 and 4, but not directly to 0 on one side and O or N on the other side; or Y' and Y'' ae identical or different and denote 1,4-phenylene, pyridazine-3,6-di-yl or pyrimidine-2,5-di-yl, but not linked directly to CH2O or CH(halogen); n is 0-2; Z and Z' are COO, CH2O or CH2CH2; and R is CN, halogen, or opt. halogen- or CN-substd. 1-12C alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy or alkylamino.
