A denture or similar is moulded as follows: a fluoride material is mixed with a high temp. solvent which resists temps. up to 260 deg.C; a measured quantity of a base material is blended into the mix to form a prefluorided material in which the fluoride is uniformly distributed; this last mix is then fused into a melt using a temp. below the high temp. limit set by the solvent, to soften the added basic material and plasticate it to mould it into a prod. which can be fitted into the human mouth. A preferred basic material concerned contains silicone resin, polyurethane, PVC, rubber latex, water blush PVC, polypropylene or polyethylene. ADVANTAGE - The procedure avoids the formation of pockets of concentrated fluoride which would produce hydrofluoric acid when mixed with saliva. It also eliminates any problems of residual fluoride powder in the extruder screw which would again produce hydrofluoric acid if mixed with moisture. It eliminates the formation of spots of discolouration of the denture etc. It prevents thumb sucking and can also cover dummies.
