The fastener assembly (11) includes a nut (21) held loosely by a cage (19) secured to an inaccessible surface of a panel (17). Serrations (41, 43) in the facing surfaces of the cage (19) and the nut (21) cause them to mutually interlock when pressed together by a tightened bolt (13) passing through aligned apertures (25, 27) in the panel (17) being fastened and the cage (19). The mutual interlocking of the nut (21) and the cage (19), either directly or through an intermediate element, causes the assembly to transfer shear loads imposed by the bolt (13) from the bolt aperture (25) in the panel (17) to the points where the cage (19) holding the nut (21) is attached to that panel (17). <IMAGE>
