PURPOSE:To minimize the loss of halogenated saturated hydrocarbon and decrease the concentration of unsaturated impurities by reacting a halogenated saturated hydrocarbon containing unsaturated impurities with chlorine gas in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A crude halogenated saturated hydrocarbon such as R-123, R-124, R-134a, R-141b or R-225ca containing unsaturated impurities is made to contact with chlorine gas in vapor phase 111 the presence of a catalyst such as alumina or active carbon for 0.01-600 sec at a temperature above the boiling point of the halogenated saturated hydrocarbon and chlorine and below 400 deg.C. The amount of chlorine gas is 1-100,000mol based on 1mol of the unsaturated impurities. The content of the unsaturated impurities in the crude halogenated saturated hydrocarbon is 10ppm to 10wt.%. The halogenated saturated hydrocarbon is useful as a foaming agent, a refrigerant, a detergent, etc. |
