PURPOSE:To obtain block activated carbon with few cracks, activated uniformly by rolling the object to be activated in a heat-resistant porous laminar material when carbonizing and activating. CONSTITUTION:Firstly, a polymer (e.g. phenol resin) with a residual carbon rate of >=20wt.% of the original polymer is incorporated with a curing agent (e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid) and foaming agent (e.g. CFC) followed by agitating and mixing, and then casting into a wood mold and heating to ca. 80 deg.C to convert into cured foam block. This block is then shaped into a board of specified form, which is, in turn, rolled in a heat-resistant porous laminar material having 20-80% of porosity (e.g. ceramic fiber board) followed by carbonization in an inert atmosphere (e.g. N2 gas) at 500-1200 deg.C. Then, the product is further heated to 600-1200 deg.C in an oxidative gas or its mixture with an inert gas (e.g. N2 gas plus steam) and activated, thus obtaining the objective high-density, highly absorptive activated carbon structure with little warpage and few cracks in activation and excellent liquid impregnability. |
