OPTICAL TRANSMITTER AND MANUFACTURE OF THE SAME

PURPOSE:To facilitate highly precise optical axis alignment in optical mounting and to realize low-loss coupling between an optical waveguide and an optical fiber in consideration of reliability and productivity without any adjustment. CONSTITUTION:A solder projection 17 called a bump is formed on a metal pad 16 on the end surface of an optical waveguide element and a temporary connection is so made that a part of a metal pad 18 on the end surface of an optical fiber is in contact with the bump 17. The bump 17 is heated and fused and then an optical fiber terminal 13 is automatically moved to the regular position of the optical waveguide element and is fixed through the self-aligning operation of the fused solder 19 based upon its surface tension, so the optical waveguide 12 and optical fiber 14 can be coupled without adjustment.
