PURPOSE:To reduce the thickness and weight of a liquid crystal display module and to obtain an optimum high-contrast black-and-white display without reference to a visual angle. CONSTITUTION:A super-twist nematic liquid crystal element 10 has uniaxially drawn phase difference films 5 and 6 installed between a liquid crystal element and a polarizing plate 4 and the chromaticity of a couple of back light sources arranged the right and left sides or top and bottom sides according to the refractive index anisotropy (uniaxial drawing direction) of phase difference films is made different so as to obtain the complementary color of the display color of a liquid crystal display element corresponding to variation in visual angle. Then the phase difference films 5 and 6 which are uniaxially drawn are used as phase plates to reduce the thickness and weight of the liquid crystal display device and the black-and-white display which is excellent against variation in the angle visual is obtained. |
