PURPOSE:To enhance the emission efficiency of a phosphor and to extend the life of a plasma display unit by providing a picture element electrode below a layer of the phosphor, and holding voltage applied to the picture element electrode in higher potential than that of other discharge electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Desired discharge electrodes 3,4 are formed on a pair of glass bases 1, 2 by sputtering of Al or by thick film printing of Ag. Prior to formation of the discharge electrodes a transparent electrode is sputtered to form a picture element electrode 10. Thereafter, lead glass is employed to form dielectric films 5, 6 on the respective discharge electrodes through thick film printing. A phosphor film 9 is formed on the picture element electrode 10 by thick film printing. Next the bases 1, 2 are opposed to each other via a spacer 7 and an inert gas of He-Xe-Ne is sealed in a discharge space 8. Discharge-electrode drive waveforms of plus electric potential are applied to the electrodes 3, 4 and voltage of higher potential than that of voltage applied to the electrodes 3, 4 is applied to the electrode 10. |
