The inner face of each vertical member 1 of the item of furniture includes a series of notches 7 which are evenly spaced vertically. Each notch 7 exhibits, at its upper part, a cutout 8 describing three quarters of a circumference, continued forwards by a horizontal part 9 and attached to the part 8 by a curved portion 10. The end of the loading bar 5 includes a slit over half its circular section. The end of the bar 5 is engaged in the circular part 8 of the notch 7, then the bar 5 is pushed down vertically in order to engage the edge 9 of the notch 7 in its end slit and to immobilise the bar 5 transversely, after which the bar 5 is pushed forwards so that it comes into abutment against the part 10 of the notch 7 and locks itself against any forward displacement. The device applies to items of display furniture using loading bars for supporting baskets or shelves, particularly in the case of baskets or shelves which are inclined forwards. <IMAGE>
