PURPOSE:To prevent the degradation in information accompanied with input/ output of picture data, the anticoincidence between data types of transmission and reception data, and the increase of the data volume. CONSTITUTION:A character read part 3 converts image data of a character into code data. A character generating part 4 takes code data of the character as the input and generates character data of image data. A transmission signal selecting part 5 performs the selective switching to transmit document data from a computer 7 and a scanner 8 as a transmission signal to a communication line after conversion from image data to code data or inverse conversion or transmits document data to the communication line as it is. A reception signal selecting part 6 performs the selective switching to send document data received from the communication line as a reception signal to the computer 7 and a printer 9 after conversion from image data to code data or inverse conversion or sends document data to the computer 7 and the printer 9 as it is.
