At the base station an encoder (2) delivers a correlated sequence of symbols to an interleaver (3) from which two data streams are switched (4) in turn to separate modulators (5.1, 5.2) and antennae (6.1, 6.2). Each block of symbols is rearranged into four sub-blocks of which the first and third are transmitted by one antenna, and the second and fourth sub-blocks by the other antenna. The mobile receiver has one antenna (7) followed by a baseband down-converting filter (8), sampler (9), deinterleaver (11), Viterbi decoder (12), fade detector (13) and inverter (14). ADVANTAGE - Good reception quality is achievable even in fading channels.
