In a spark erosion process, a test voltage is applied to the inter electrode gap at the beginning of a discharge cycle, which includes a pause and one or more high current discharges, and a high current erosion discharge is initiated at the end of the resulting test discharge depending on the test discharge current. The test voltage (UT) is continuously increased until a test discharge occurs and if the test discharge current (iT) variation per unit time is sufficiently large, the high current erosion discharge is immediately initiated. Spark erosion appts. for carrying out the process is also claimed. ADVANTAGE - The test discharge current allows differentiation of dielectric displacement current flow or resistive current flow so that the erosion discharge can be immediately initiated, thus increasing erosion speed and efficiency.
